How to Accept Card Payments on Invoices with Stripe

Connect Stripe under Settings → Payments, then turn on Stripe on an invoice: clients click Pay by card, and the invoice updates itself. Individual or Agency Plan.

Prerequisites

  • Plan: Individual Plan ($19 one-time) or Agency Plan ($49 one-time). On the Free Plan the Stripe button is greyed out - PayPal works on every plan.
  • Stripe: a Stripe account you can log in to
  • Invoice: an invoice in BreezeDoc (see How to Create and Send an Invoice in BreezeDoc)

How Does Stripe Work With BreezeDoc Invoices?

  • You connect your Stripe account once, under Settings → Payments.
  • On each invoice you choose whether Stripe is offered.
  • Your client opens the invoice with View invoice in the invoice email and clicks Pay by card. Stripe's checkout page opens with the amount still due.
  • When Stripe completes the payment, BreezeDoc records it on the invoice automatically and the invoice shows Paid.

How Do I Connect Stripe?

  1. Open Settings → Payments.
  2. Under Stripe ("Connect with your Stripe account to accept credit card payments on invoices."), click Connect with Stripe.
  3. Log in to Stripe and approve the connection.
  4. You return to Invoices and see "Stripe account connected successfully."

Settings Payments page with the Connect with Stripe button highlighted

Back under Settings → Payments, the button now reads Disconnect Stripe.

How Do I Offer Card Payments on an Invoice?

  1. Open Invoices and click Create new Invoice (or edit an invoice).
  2. Under Online payment methods, turn on Stripe. It shows Connected once your account is linked; otherwise use Connect account.
  3. Finish the invoice and send it.

You can offer PayPal on the same invoice - your client then sees Pay by card "or" the PayPal buttons. See How to Accept PayPal Payments.

What Does My Client See?

  • Pay by card on the invoice page while an amount is left to pay.
  • Stripe's checkout page, with their email filled in, for the remaining balance in the invoice's currency.
  • After paying, they return to the invoice page.

BreezeDoc adds no fee of its own; Stripe's fees apply to your Stripe account. Payments made outside the invoice page can be added with Record payment - see Invoice Payments: Online, Recorded, and Tracking Activity.

How Do I Disconnect Stripe?

  1. Open Settings → Payments and click Disconnect Stripe.
  2. You see "Stripe account disconnected successfully."

While Stripe is disconnected, Pay by card no longer appears on your invoices - including invoices you already sent. Connect again (the same or another Stripe account) to bring it back.

Troubleshooting

Connect with Stripe is greyed out

  • Stripe needs the Individual or Agency Plan - see which plan you are on under Settings → Plan, or upgrade.

My client does not see Pay by card

  • Check that Stripe is turned on under Online payment methods on that invoice.
  • Check that Settings → Payments shows Disconnect Stripe - that means Stripe is connected.
  • The button is hidden once the invoice is fully paid.

The client paid, but the invoice is not marked paid

  • BreezeDoc records the payment when Stripe completes the checkout. If the client paid another way, add it with Record payment.

I want to use a different Stripe account

  • Click Disconnect Stripe, then Connect with Stripe and log in to the other Stripe account.
