Document Cloning and Duplication: Reusing Documents
Clone a BreezeDoc document to reuse its pages, fields, and parties for a new recipient. Emails and signatures are cleared, so every copy you send starts fresh.
Overview
Cloning creates a new, independent copy of an existing document. It's the fastest way to send the same document to several people, such as a lease for each tenant or an agreement for each client, without placing the fields again.
Prerequisites
- Plan: Available on all plans (Free, Individual, and Agency).
- Access: Your own documents, or team documents where your team role is Owner, Editor, or Sender. The Viewer role can't clone (see Team Roles and Permissions).
How Do I Clone a Document?
- Go to Documents.
- Find the document and click More next to it (Actions on a phone).
- Click Clone.

You stay on the Documents page and see "Document cloned!". The copy appears at the top of the same list, with "(Clone)" added to its title and the status Not Sent. A clone of a team document stays in that team.
Note: Clone is only available from the Documents list. It isn't in the document editor.
How Do I Send the Clone?
- On the copy, click More → Edit to open it in the editor.
- Optionally, rename it: click the title at the top, type a new name (for example, "Lease - Unit 4B"), and click OK.
- Adjust fields if needed. Changes save automatically.
- Click Send to signers → Send via email.
- Enter each party's Name and Email, set the Document Expiration, and click Send for signature.
What Does a Clone Copy?
Copied to the clone
- All pages of the original file
- All fields, with the same position, size, and settings (such as Required)
- The parties and their names, with each field still assigned to the same party. Update the names when you send, if they've changed.
- Your custom email subject and message, and your redirect URL (Individual and Agency Plans)
Not copied
- Recipient email addresses (except your own, if you're one of the signers), so a copy can't go to the wrong person by accident
- Signatures and anything signers filled in
- Sent, viewed, and completed status (the clone starts as Not Sent)
- The expiration date
- CC recipients
- Activity history
The clone is independent. Editing, sending, or deleting it doesn't affect the original, and the other way around.
Clone or Template?
- Clone when you already have a document set up and want copies of it. You can clone the same document as many times as you need.
- Create a template for documents you use often. Templates live on the Templates page, and Use template creates a new document in one click. To make one, upload the file on the Templates page and place its fields there.
Note: BreezeDoc doesn't have a "Save as Template" option for existing documents. If you've already placed fields on a document, cloning it is the quickest way to reuse it.
Tips
- Keep a master copy. Leave the original unsent and always clone from it, so every copy starts clean.
- Rename each copy right away (for example, "NDA - Acme Corp") so you can find it with Search on the Documents page.
- Filter the Documents list by Not sent to find copies you haven't sent yet. The other filters are All, Sent, Completed, In progress, and Expired - see Document Status Explained.
- Restart an expired or unfinished document by cloning it. The copy starts fresh, with no signatures.
Troubleshooting
I don't see the Clone option
- Clone is in the More menu (Actions on a phone) on the Documents page. It isn't in the document editor.
- For team documents, your role must be Owner, Editor, or Sender. If your role is Viewer, ask your team owner to change it.
- Templates can't be cloned. To create a document from a template, click Use template on the Templates page.
The clone has no recipient emails
- This is expected. Enter each recipient's email when you send the copy (Send to signers → Send via email).
The clone has no expiration date or CC recipients
- Expiration dates and CC recipients aren't copied. Set them again when you send the copy.
Still stuck? Email support@breezedoc.com with the name of the document you are cloning and whether it is a personal or team document.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is cloning available on the Free Plan?
Yes. Cloning is available on all plans.
Does cloning count toward my monthly document allowance?
No. Only sending counts. A clone counts once you send it.
Can I clone a document that's already signed or partly signed?
Yes. The copy starts as Not Sent with empty fields, so you can send it again.
Can I save a document as a template?
Not currently. You can clone the document as many times as you need, or create a template by uploading the file on the Templates page. See Creating and Using Templates in BreezeDoc.
